Memes a Gogo
Now that I finally done watching gobs and gobs of 24 and Lost, I feel I have time to reunite with the world. I can go out and round out my Lacoste tan. I can see James Brown shake his sad, old ass in the park. Or I can do this music list thing that Cory tasked me with and then everybody else did so that now I feel I have to in order to be cool. (On a similar subject, I smoked my first-ever-in-my-whole-entire-life cigarette while in France a few weeks ago. I figured that 28 was a great time to finally give it a chance. It made me cry.)
Total volume of music on my computer:
3.5 GB
The other computer has a bunch too. And then there are the gobs and gobs of back up CD-roms.
The last CD I bought:
Ray's Vast Basement - On The Banks of the Time, and By a River Burning Blue
(I bought them both together in Feb.)
I still really want to buy the newest M. Ward, although.
Song playing right now:
Tzigalo - Some Frenchy Word
This is a French quartet we saw playing in Arles (the place Van Gogh went crazy). They do a Django Reinhart type hot jazz thing. Very refreshing and urbane of me, huh?
Five songs I listen to a lot (or that mean a lot to me):
I was going to farce this whole thing with songs like "76 Trombones from the Music Man. Oh man, that song is agog with lusty passion." Butt that would probably be more work than just listing what I actually like.
Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (or maybe Everybody Knows, or The Partisan, etc. etc.)
You are my Sunshine (sung by anybody. ItÂs that great of a song!)
Mississippi John Hurt - Goodnight Irene (Dr. John does a pretty good version of this too)
They Might Be Giants - Letterbox (or maybe Hope I Get Old Before I Die, or 32 Footsteps, or Shoehorn with Teeth, or Whistling in the Dark, or If I Wasn't Shy, etc.)
Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehaving
Stars Fell on Alabama (Such a great song, but I haven't found the seminal version yet.)
Billie Holiday - Blue Moon
Bob Dylan - You Belong To Me (or maybe Rainy Day Women)
Tom Waits - Cold Cold Ground (or maybe Jockey Full of Bourbon, or Hoist That Rag, or Crossroads, or Cold Water, or Table Top Joe, etc.
Frank Black - Los Angeles (or Bullet, or Coastline, or I Love Your Brain, or Debaser, etc.)
Johnny Cash - I Walk The Line
Monty Python - I Like Chinese
Gonzo - Someday
13 is the new 5.
Five people to whom I am shall hand it off to:
Screw that.
And yet I'll bet the most interesting part of that whole thing is the little bit about smoking for the first time.

A hearty welcome home, my friend. I'll give you a call sometime soon and you can tell me all about it.
Some comments on your music meme:
1. don't bother buying M. Ward, I'll send you a copy. The re's no liner art, its just a flimsy cd case. Unless you really want to support him, which he does deserve. I bought the CD at the show so hopefully it all went to him, or more of it than buying from Amazon or something.
2. I love "Cold Cold Ground" too. I saw a GREAT live concert video of him doing that song in the mid eighties on VH1 Classics last night, it was awe inspiring. It was followed by a semi-cool video of "Headache" from Teenager of the Year by FB.
3. I'm downloading the newest album by The National, I'll send that to you when its done. I haven't heard it yet.
Have you ever heard Pinback? I think you'd love them. I saw on EnergyFace that Cory also likes them, for good reason. They are mind blowing. I would love to go see their show here next month but it's $30 per ticket!

Justin - $30 for real? Good lord... maybe they're starting to get... biggerer.
Steve - I can't believe you smoked a cigarrette, you drity Frenchy. What's next? Mustard in your armpits?
Posted by cory!
Cory-
Its $30 for tickets, but its for a few other bands playing at the same venue, some local radio station festival. They're the only band there that I'd care to see though.

Justin - Cory already beat you to the introducing me to Pinback. In fact, you mentioned them and then I put the disc that Cory burnt for me in the CD Player (Blue Screen Life). They haven't impressed me enough to write about, but I guess I'd say they are good. The National IS good although. They are bit like 16HP, in their hard-core country creepiness, and that is a good thing. Festivals suck for seeing bands you like. The sets are always too short and crowds too annoying.
Cory - Aren't you happy that I did your list thing? Now can I go and smoke in peace?

And just so you guys know, I showed Cory Pinback which was shown to me by a lesbian, vegan PETA freak (really).

Cory and Courtney, have you two heard Optiganally Yours, the side project by Pinback's Rob Crow? It's pretty good, but pretty goofy too. If you haven't heard it, let me know and I'll send you some.
