You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how.

Gone With The Wind is Marigold's favorite movie and I just don't get it. She gets very upset and defensive when I say that Scarlett is a real bitch. This is not a main character I can sympathize with, like, or even want to live through the war. The best part of the movie, that I believe was supposed to come off as noble, was when Scarlett gets back to Tara (pronounced like Pres. Bush's "Terror") after her long ordeal. She swears to the heavens that, "If I have to lie, steal, cheat, or kill, as God as my witness, I'll never be hungry again." Yeah, that's a cause I can get behind, a prissy, rich, selfish bitch that would lie, steal, cheat, or even kill me if I happened to be walking by, nibbling on an apple. I'm glad that the movie ended with her sad and alone. "My darling, you're such a child. You think that by saying I'm sorry, all the past can be corrected." Whore.

Oh, LORD I had to watch Gone with the Wind a couple years ago for Southern Lit and the main thing I couldn't understand is why people have such strong reactions to it. It was boring swill. Not even over-the-top enough to be a Marigold movie, I thought.
The only thing I had a reaction to was the whole rape-as-romance scene, 'cause it was icky. And when their kid bit the dust (literally), 'cause that was kind of sad.

People, people! How do I count you among my most esteemed?

If you know me at all, you know I love the soap operas. I love to root for characters that are despicable. The bitchier, the more self-centered, self-serving and self-important, the better. The sweet ones annoy me. They have no substance. I like the flaws, the angst--one of the reasons I think I want to teach high school--characters are more interesting if I want to hate them but can't for one reason or another. That's how I feel about Scarlett O'Hara. And I like that Rhett Butler gets her in the end. That when she finally realizes that she's been a bitch the whole time and that she does love him after all, he tells her that she's too late. I like that it doesn't have a happy ending. That goodness(Mellie) dies in the end.
